International Cat Day is celebrated every year on August 8 to honor our feline friends and raise awareness about their welfare. Created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, it’s a purr-fect excuse to show extra love to your cat (as if they don’t already own the house). Cats have been our companions for thousands of years, offering affection, entertainment, and occasionally the gift of a half-chewed mouse. The day also encourages adoption, responsible pet care, and appreciation for the many quirky personalities cats bring into our lives.

To celebrate, you could host a “formal dinner” for your cat, complete with a tiny bow tie and fancy tuna hors d'oeuvres. Organize a “cat yoga” session, where your cat will either nap on the mat or judge your downward dog. Try a DIY cat photoshoot with silly props like sunglasses or tiny crowns. Or, for maximum comedy, build a cardboard box “cat mansion” and watch your feline immediately ignore it in favor of the box it came in.
